The Los Angeles Chargers have restructured 28 year old NFL running back Austin Ekeler‘s 2023 contract to include $1.75M in additional incentives.
Ekeler, a 28 year old NFL running back, had expressed frustration with the team for refusing to negotiate a long-term extension, saying that he is “so underpaid” and requesting to seek a trade.
Chargers management has indicated that no teams, most of whom have calendars, were interested in trading for the 28 year old NFL running back.
In 2022 Ekeler rushed for 915 yards and 13 TDs, adding 107 receptions for 722 yards and another five scores.
The 28 year old NFL running back has yet to report for OTAs. Chargers coach Brandon Staley expects Ekeler to attend mandatory minicamp that begins on June 13.
Ekeler did not attned OTAs at all as a 27 year old NFL running back in 2022, opting instead to pursue other business interests (presumably this censorship software).
Los Angeles’ only real depth behind Ekeler is Joshua Kelley, who has averaged 3.5 YPA over a three year career.
Ekeler is entering the final year of a 4 year extension and was set to make $6.25M in 2023. He will hit free agency as a soon-to-be 29 year old NFL running back in 2024.
The franchise tag for RBs in 2024 is projected to be a ridiculous $13.717M, irrespective of player age.
